#BMAWeek Day #2 Sits Squarely on Birch Wathen Lenox

We come to the second day of Black Male Achievement Week with 4 successful young men ranging from kindergarten through grade 10. We thank Brad Battaglia @BWL for helping RIISE recognize these achievers.

Ciaran with his "charges" at Intercession In his sophomore year at Birch, Ciaran Short is an honor student who plays for the Varsity Basketball team. Ciaran takes his scholarly swag to the Children’s Program at The Church of the Intercession as a Staff Coach. Way to go Ciaran! We celebrate you. By the way, Ciaran’s brother, Aidan also attended BWL and is currently a Junior at Bodwoin College in Maine.

Bryce & Drew Jones

Bryce & Drew Jones

The Brothers JonesBryce in kindergarten, Drew in 3rd grade, are both described as excellent and kind students. Parents, Shakira and Darren Jones, had this to say… “My husband and I are very proud of them. We take advantage of teachable moments to help them understand their abilities and potential.  The ultimate goal of the teachable moments is to help them be informed, confident and comfortable with themselves and with others. We provide opportunities for them to freely express themselves at home which helps us to understand how to love, support, and encourage them. In our experience of being parents, we have learned the importance of being flexible and most importantly open to learning from our boys. Thank you for this recognition and opportunity to celebrate our boys and all the other boys for their achievements. It does starts at home, thank you Shakira & Darren. We are excited about watching Drew & Bryce grow and develop as exceptional young men.   Jalen Bio Pic 2013_opt Eighth grader, Jalen Phifer, is an accomplished actor and tap dancer whose passion for the arts has achieved recognition from The Michael Perelstein Memorial Scholarship Fund  - Discover Your Passion competition. The award was announced this October at the PAL Gifted and Talented Conference in NYC. The impressive award will go towards diversifying his training in music and dance. Jalen was also presented with the awesome challenge to produce a video to encourage other black males to follow their passion for dance – think Ailey! Jalen, congratulations and don’t forget to share that video with RIISE!   Job well done, gentlemen.
