2014 Young Men of Color Symposium “Capturing Our Passion; Strengthening Our Voice”

Saturday, April 5,  10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Riverdale Country School
5250 Fieldston Road
Bronx, NY

This symposium is a leadership conference for young men of color in independent schools in grades 6-12 in the NYC area. The day will feature workshops and opportunities for participants to learn skills geared towards self-advocacy and academic achievement. Keynote speaker Dr. Howard Stevenson will frame the day with workable strategies to recast racial stress and microaggressions, common experiences for students of color in independent schools. The goal of the event is to create a collaborative community of schools serving young men of color.

Sponsors include Horace Mann & Riverdale Country – RIISE member schools.

Here’s the deal mom & dad’s, request to attend must be handled through your school. The first person you/your son should inquire with is the school’s office of Diversity. Don’t have one, hmmm, well then how about your Community Development team, or your son’s Dean/Advisor. Schools are handling registration cost.

Boys of color should not miss the opportunity to hear from Dr. Howard Stevenson, Professor of Education and Africana Studies and former Chair of the Applied Psychology and Human Development Division in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He has co-authored numerous publications on independent school education and students of color. His latest book is entitled Promoting Racial Literacy In Schools: Differences That Make a Difference
Look out for upcoming RIISE Spotlight with Dr. Stevenson!
