Many parents of color shy away from the prospect of thinking about boarding schools as viable educational options for their children. But why is this the case? The top reasons are rooted in unease about cost, distance and support for their children. Because these are very real and legitimate concerns about applying to boarding schools, parents often wonder whether the sacrifices are worth considering at all.
For sure, boarding school campuses may often be located a long distance away from a student’s home, and the cost of attendance can amount to as much as a college education. However, a school like Tabor Academy, a mid-size, co-ed boarding and day school for grades 9-12 located on Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA, is only a 3 ½ hour car ride from New York City. Also, boarding schools, including Tabor, are continuing to work diligently to increase the financial resources we make available to help parents meet both the stated and hidden costs. We currently provide 31% of our students, who have demonstrated need, with financial assistance. Also, we make financial aid decisions separately from admissions decisions, so families need not worry about their children’s applications for admittance being impacted by whether or not they can afford the full tuition.
Finally, Tabor is unwavering in the support of students. Our mission is to foster care for others and committed citizenship, to instill the highest standards of achievement and to encourage personal responsibility. We are dedicated to continuing to grow as a school community in which all of our members have voice, are given respect, and see their individual identities reflected and affirmed in the curriculum, co-curriculum, and physical and virtual environments of the school. This support is most notably evident in our small class sizes, our dormitory housing (which allow for more intentional relationship building between students, their peers and faculty), our extracurricular programming and our health and wellness services. For families looking for additional school choices, I encourage them to consider the benefits of a boarding school education and the many possibilities of the Tabor experience.
