5th Annual Hilltop Diversity Conference Today – V.O.I.C.E. Tonight!!!

My daughter was super eager to get this unique day rolling, and here is why. A recent note from her head of middle school…
This year, Fieldston Middle is hosting the 5th Annual Hilltop Diversity Conference on Tuesday, April 23rd. In addition to including Horace Mann and Riverdale, the conference includes a partnership with three local public schools: Riverdale-Kingsbridge AcademyIn Tech Academy, and Tech International Charter School.

We are excited about the opportunities for students from all of these schools to interact and explore issues of diversity as they relate to themselves and to their communities. The goal of the conference is to create safe spaces for students to explore the intersections of the 8 core cultural identifiers: of ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class.  The conference is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, inclusive gathering of students attending Hilltop schools and their partner public schools.

This year’s theme is, “How is your voice heard?”  Phil Kaye and Sarah Kay from Project V.O.I.C.E will be the guest performers. They are spoken word artists who have performed at national poetry slam contests, TED Conferences and on HBO. The collaboration between Fieldston’s MS Diversity Committee and the Hilltop student planning group, comprised of students who have attended the conference in the past, ensures that student voices are heard during the planning process.
