A word from David White, Artistic & Executive Director at The Yard – Martha’s Vineyard

“A circle of women, a circle of determined black women, look into Camille A. Brown’s choreographic mirror and see reflected back the black girls they once were, and perhaps still are. Following in the tracks of Mr. Tol E. Rance, BLACK GIRL is an ongoing investigation of the identities imposed upon an often lived out by black girls moving into the dangerous neighborhood of American womanhood. This powerful stuff, with dance as the hammer of affirmation, not of self but of sisterhood. To say the least, the early stage of BLACK GIRL are thrilling, I am waiting for her to come home to The Yard”

With this praise, RIISE is honored to Co-Host Youth Night’s World Premiere of  ~

BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play

The Joyce Theater – NYC

September 25 at 8pm

RIISE is calling Independent School Girls of Color, Calling Black Girls, Mother’s & Father’s of Black Girls, Brother’s of Black Girls, Uncle’s & Aunt’s & Cousins of Black Girls, Educators of Black Girls, All Girls in Sisterhood with Black Girls

we invite you to join us to witness Camille A. Brown’s BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play ( http://www.camilleabrown.org/blackgirllinguisticplay/), which reveals the complexity of carving out a self-defined identity as a black female in urban American culture. In a society where black women are often only portrayed in terms of their strength, resiliency, or trauma, this work seeks to interrogate these narratives by representing a nuanced spectrum of black womanhood in a racially and politically charged world.

Tickets for preferred seating with RIISE on Friday, September 25, is $25. To RSVP contact us by clicking this link by 9/16.
