Darrin Steve Boland – Horace Mann, 11th grade

Today is the first day of Black Male Achievement Week! RIISE asked our member schools to help us recognize Black Male Achievement by nominating a student or faculty member who has demonstrated achievement.

We thank you for joining RIISE today as we recognize Darrin Steve Boland (who goes by Steve) as he works hard to excel at Horace Mann. Thank you Markell Parker for nominating Steve. We look forward to following Steve as he continues to challenge the odds. This is what Steve had to say about his nomination and his leadership.

Hi Mr. Parker,

I am happy to be nominated. I am proud of my achievement of becoming a Student Ambassador Leader at Horace Mann. I enjoy touring prospective students and their families around the school and showcasing my many facets of extracurricular activities including football, basketball, and orchestra where I play the viola. It is an amazing way to represent my school and share myself with others.

Congratulations Steve!

Steve may be excelling against the odds, yet gaps still exist. Click here for statistics shared by the College Board, and join them and American Promise for a google hangout today, 2/3, at 2pm.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for RIISE’s next #BMAWeek recognition.

We’d be happy to have you comment below with your nominations for Black Male Achievement.

Check your local listing for the airing of American Promise on PBS’ POV tonight!

This is wonderful and is a grand way for our children to be role models. Can we find a way celebrate our girls during women’s history month?
