As you may recall, RIISE member school, Calhoun was awarded a $250,000 grant in 2012 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to create a three-part program for students on Deconstructing Racism. Recently, I visited Calhoun’s site , and I was blown away to learn of the expanded joint venture with Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow!  We are really excited about the program and asked David Alpert, DR Project Director, to talk about the joint venture:

” Young people of all colors have a critical role to play in challenging older generations to break the cycle of discrimination and exclusion if things are ever going to change.  Deconstructing Racism / The New Jim Crow will expose the myth of color-blindness in a society that for many espouses a post-racial mantra.  Deconstructing Racism / The New Jim Crow will transform a virtually silenced conversation about white privilege, race and racism.  The nationwide Project is targeted for students, parents, teachers, adults — and policy-makers”

BTW, creative partners in the new venture are Point Made Films (Prep School Negro ( a RIISE favorite!) and Adopted), Vital Pictures (Race: The Power of An Illusion and Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?), and The New Press (publisher of The New Jim Crow)
