Dr. Joy Lawson Davis 2/22@ The IDEAL School of Manhattan -“My High Achieving Kid of Color is Doing Just Fine! Right?”

Many have inquired. They’ve been asking for Dr. Joy Lawson Davis, a noted scholar focused on cultural diversity issues in gifted and advanced learner education. Dr. Joy, as RIISE affectionately calls her, is an educator and consultant, and a regular RIISE contributor who sits on the board of the National Association for Gifted Children; she is the author of the book Bright, Talented, & Black: A Guide for Families of African American Gifted Learners.

Dr. Joy is in town for one day only, and she’s spending it with us. The timing couldn’t be better.  Remember the scene in American Promise (watch on PBS’ POV 2/3) when the young Idris asks if things would be better if he were white? Did you read RIISE’s recent blog on the Atlantic article, When Minorities Attend Elite Private Schools. Whether you saw the documentary or read the blog the issues are familiar.

As we sort it all out, it’s time we had a foremost educator talk to parents directly. Are our advanced learning and high achieving kids having a tougher time in our elite institutions socially and emotionally; are they sharing some of the micro-aggressions they’re trying to untangle; or, are they suffering in silence in appreciation of distinguished education; can we give them the tools to succeed and thrive? Dr. Joy Lawson Davis will discuss this, and more:

  • Unique social-emotional needs of high ability children of color
  • Peer relationships (same race/other race peers; social peers/intellectual peers)
  • Rising above the ‘triple quandary’: being high ability/of color/member of oppressed societal group
  • Ingenious strategies used by highly successful young people of color to survive and thrive in ‘the academy’
  • Importance of racial identity development

On Saturday, February 22, IDEAL School of Manhattan will host this empowering discussion for parents. Seating is limited so register today for:

Absolutely can’t wait to meet this woman in person!
Dr. Joy has been amazingly supportive of the RIISE network.
So many of our families have expressed their concern about the social and emotional issues of their gifted learners.
Read Dr. Joy’s blog on the 5 traits to look for to find the genius in your genius, and register to see her next Saturday morning. Thank you Chapin for hosting the event.
