Jazz – True American Art Form Takes Shape @ Riverdale, stopping by the Jazz Standard!

Jackie Modeste, Riverdale mom, educator, radio host & Jazz authoritarian, saved the day and captured for RIISE what we missed! More on Jackie’s son, Emilio and the Kickstarter campaign to gig in Australia, after you enjoy her blog!

On Sunday, January 12th, the Riverdale Country School (RCS) high school jazz band performed at the Jazz Standard for a packed house as guests of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra (JSYO). Led by professional Saxophonist and RCS jazz band Director Jason Curry, the RCS band opened the set at the legendary club playing a tightly woven, lively rendition of a song made classic by Ellington, “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” replete with featured solos on saxophone and guitar.

Audience members included not only RCS parents, friends and jazz aficionados but NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens (trumpet & flugelhorn) who expressed his admiration for the remarkable talent and work being done by fellow musician Jason Curry.

The RCS band played a short set before turning the stage over to the JYSO. The crowd enjoyed an afternoon of culture, great music, food and a family fun-filled experience. You can join the jazz brunch and hear the JYSO perform each Sunday from 1-3PM at the Jazz Standard, 116 E 27th Street in Manhattan.
