What Our Students {Jalen. Gibby. Michael. Dakota. Emilio. & Crew} Did This Summer

Reflections of Complexions
Student Submission Form – Deadline 12/15

Hi Ms. Collins,

It’s Jalen Daniels from Columbia Prep. I hope you are having a fantastic summer!! I am excited to announce that I am creating a book with my fellow friend,  Ifeoma “Ify” White-Thorpe from Morris Hills High School. For our book, we are requesting that students of various backgrounds submit stories concerning their own personal reflections, whether or not they feel as if they are marginalized, their own observations regarding social classifications or anything that comes from the heart. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1P_-BMs7_FM1CmzChV0gRvocwCY2Jwxla3ty3bR7_Qz0.

We are kindly asking for your help in advertising our project to the RIISE teens due to the credibility of this venerable organization. In order to make this project a reality, we feel as if your participation will help immensely, as well as providing publicity for RIISE.  Ify and I firmly believe in the power of publication, and the medium it can provide for youthful voices to be heard. Naturally, we are confident that the RIISE teens will have thought provoking, and moving messages to contribute to our book.

Thank you so much!!
Jalen Daniels and Ifeoma White-Thorpe

Jalen & Ify, it would be our pleasure to promote your awesome and valuable undertaking. Thank you for raising the voices of your peers!

Check out her Grand Slams!

Who doesn’t have tennis fever as we watch history in the making? Well, there is another champion making slams! Meet Gibby!!
Fourteen year old Gibson Thomas attends Horace Mann School. Some of her summer victories include Girl’s 16’s Single’s Champion for the Metropolitan Interclub Tennis League (MITL), where Gibby represented the College Racquet Club. In July she also won her first 18 and under tournament, the APTC August Challenger.

You go Gibby, and may you continue with your grand slams this academic year!

Then and Now

Where does the time go? Back in 2011, RIISE was proud to Spotlight Michael Byfield, who at the time had just just graduated from The Town School and was on his way to Horace Mann School. We recently checked in with his mom, Audrey, who proudly shared that after graduating from HM, his  summer move was to Washington University in St. Louis,  a private research university, and “he is loving it!”.

Proud of you Michael. We’ll be checking back in on you soon!

A Bunch of Beginnings

From the moment we met Dakota we knew she was a Courageous Girl! This summer Dakota proved us right by Zip Lining in Jamaica!. Now that that’s crossed off her list of things to do, Miss Dakota is crossing the threshold of Greenwich Academy, joining Group II as part of the Class of 2026!

Love this girl!

A Jazz Fat Cat!

“At 15 years old, Riverdale Country School sophomore Emilio Modeste is making a name for himself in the jazz world. This summer he performed in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Summer Jazz Academy for advanced students in Castleton, Virginia. Emilio earned a coveted seat in one of two big bands by auditioning in an international competition. Locally, Emilio performs in jam sessions at Small’s in Greenwich Village and recently debuted at the Fat Cat as part of the Clifford Barbaro quartet. This performance season, you can also catch Emilio each Sunday from 1-3PM at the Jazz Standard where he performs for the weekly jazz brunch as the leader of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra.”   Emilio’s website

He makes us proud too, Jackie! Continue to blow our minds Emilio, and we’ll see you at the Jazz Standard this season!

Last but certainly not least…RIISEMV2

A RIISE shout out to the Crew who showed up, and showed out in Martha’s Vineyard!
Have a fantastic school year!!
