On Sunday, May 5, at the beautiful Museum of the City of New York, 175 powerful parents and twenty of the New York areas top independent schools convened for the 2013 RIISE Parent Power Conference. The conference successfully focused on the interdependent relationship between socially responsible recruitment and well-balanced retention of an independent school education for families of color.

We started off with an address from Pamela Jolly, who gave a thought-provoking and inspiring keynote reaffirming how an independent school education can shift the paradigm of family legacy. Yet, Pamela was quick to note an imperative for navigating the journey as families of color – recognizing and trusting in our cultural capital. In addition, she applauded our RIISE network as the strength in numbers necessary to support one another as we invest in our next generation of confident and competent global leaders. Thank you Pamela for recognizing the role of RIISE in the journey!

We want to thank our amazing parents for packing into the Recruitment Hall to meet outstanding schools and for attending the Parent Power Panel Workshops sharing joys, challenges, and everything in between with one another. A big shout out to the workshop  facilitators and panelists for leading the discussions. We also thank our participating schools and RIISE member schools for filling up the Recruitment Hall with enthusiasm and transparency, welcoming families of color to learn more about their fine schools while recognizing that retention supports recruitment, in other words, happy and valued parents tell other parents! Finally, we can’t forget to thank our sponsors for making the conference even more engaging!
