RIISE: Empowering Families of Color in Independent School Education Since 2009
Understanding the unique challenges faced by families of color, a beloved head of lower school once wished for a "bible" to guide and support them through the complexities of independent school culture.
While not a bible, RIISE has grown into a nationally recognized strategic lifestyle network that promotes equity, inclusion, and the success of families of color in independent schools.
Culturally specific and deeply responsive, RIISE supports families, young scholars, and independent school communities by providing actionable roadmaps for academic, social, and emotional success. We equip families with an essential toolkit to navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and build enduring educational legacies.
RIISE amplifies the voices and experiences of families of color and empowers prospective and enrolled families, creating space for meaningful impact and lasting change.
Mission
RIISE is a support network for Black and Brown families navigating independent school culture grounded in radical love, self-acceptance, and authentic expression. We honor cultural richness, perseverance, and emotional wellness in every step of the journey.
Vision
RIISE envisions independent schools as inclusive spaces reflecting increased access, application, and enrollment of talented Black and Brown scholars and their contributing families thriving through belonging and perseverance, fostering legacies of authentic expression.
About Gina Parker Collins
Hey there! I’m Gina Parker Collins, a proud independent school mom, parent advocate, school advisor, social justice activist, and founder of RIISE. Since 2006, I’ve been navigating the independent school journey as a passionate observer, participant, and change agent. In 2009, inspired by a call to action from the head of my children’s lower school division, I launched Resources In Independent School Education (RIISE) to amplify this work.
For over a decade, I’ve embraced both the privileges and challenges of these spaces. What inspires me most is witnessing my children and other talented Black and Brown scholars thrive and excel, often against the odds. I firmly believe we belong here—our intellectual and cultural capital are invaluable, and our presence is a legacy worth building upon.
At RIISE, I focus on illuminating the unique experiences of families of color in independent schools, acknowledging the nuances, and delivering tools and strategies to attract visionary families, empower their educational journeys, and foster lasting community connections. Through curated content, engaging platforms, and actionable insights, RIISE continues to challenge the status quo, honoring the legacy of those who fought for equity and excellence in education.
Beyond my work, I cherish quality time with my family, indulging in documentaries, and enjoying fine dining experiences. Together, we rise!
