1899 in Newport, RI, five steadfast and determined women, members of the Negro Women's League strategized and organized on behalf of African American's civil rights and Women's Suffrage. The tradition continues with many sheroes leading the way within our independent schools. And, with these twenty-three Black leaders, who are shaping history right now, all firsts in their respective fields, with an indy school alum among them, Amanda Gorman.
W.E.B Du Bois used this stunning photograph as part of "The Exhibit of American Negroes" curated for the Paris Exposition in 1900 to disrupt the negative imagery used to depict Black Americans.
Over a century later, we still need the counter-narratives, like those of independent school applicants and scholars, along with the protections from biases, trauma, and disenfranchisement traditionally served as the 'Blacklash' to achievement and advancement.
Black History is the very foundation of human history and American History. So, why do we feel compelled to distill the tremendous and undeniable achievements and contributions of Black people to a whole 28 days?
It's nearly impossible but necessary, reminding all that Black folk's souls, especially women stirring for liberation and equity, pushed the way forward for many of the liberties we experience today.
February will soon pass, making the next three hundred and thirty-seven days just as important in honoring and emulating these five women and many other Black people seeking justice through education, liberation, & celebration.
