"Equipping Black Families in Independent Schools: Reclaiming Ownership, Impact, and Scholar Support Amid DEI Challenges"

Black families face unique challenges in independent schools, but we can create safer, thriving spaces for our scholars through strategic parent-school partnerships. In this exclusive video, we dive into actionable strategies to strengthen partnerships, advocate effectively, and empower families. Watch the full video and join the movement with RIISE.

Step 1: Assert Your Voice Through the Parent-School Partnership

Black families can cultivate ownership by becoming proactive and visible participants in their school communities.

  • Engage Consistently: Attend school meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and community events to establish a strong presence.

  • Advocate Authentically: Share your family's unique perspective to help shape inclusive policies and practices.

  • Collaborate Intentionally: Partner with teachers, administrators, and other families to advocate for your scholar's needs and ensure their cultural identity is affirmed.

Step 2: Equip Scholars with Tools for Success

Help your scholars thrive by building their confidence and ability to navigate school spaces with a sense of belonging.

  • Promote Self-Advocacy: Teach them how to communicate their needs and speak up in classrooms or extracurricular spaces.

  • Leverage Resources: Encourage them to participate in programs, tutoring, or affinity groups that reflect their identity and support their growth.

  • Foster Resilience: Share stories of perseverance and equip them with strategies to overcome challenges in privileged spaces.

Step 3: Build and Leverage Community Connections

Find power in community and collective advocacy to enhance your family’s experience.

  • Connect with Like-Minded Families: Join or create networks of Black families to share resources, insights, and strategies.

  • Collaborate with Cultural Organizations: Work with groups like RIISE that empower families with workshops, resources, and shared experiences.

  • Elevate Collective Voices: Participate in school initiatives and leadership roles to ensure diverse perspectives are integral to decision-making.
